Look seriously at plasma for 42" and up. The next size down is 26". The two top brands, for performance and reliability, in those sizes are Panasonic Viera and Sony Bravia. A little less expensive, but still good quality is Toshiba Regza followed, perhaps, by Sharp Aquos and Samsung. With sharp shopping, you will find a 720p/1080i set in one of these brands for your budget price. If you're going to buy an LCD, stick with Samsung, Sharp or Sony (in that order). If you will mostly use it as a computer monitor, buy an LCD.
