I watch tv & computer on an LCD projector. My screens viewing surface is 68″ across. in 4/3 fullscreen mode that’s 85 ” diagonally I sit about 10 ‘ away and I love it. 40 ” will be no problem.

There are four variables to consider: distance to the screen, screen size, aspect ratio (16X9, 4X3, etc), and maximum screen resolution (480, 720, 1080, etc).
Having only given two of these, then the basic formula is 4.25:1. For every 1 foot of distance, you want 4.25 inches of screen. So for 10 feet distance, your screen should be 42 to 43 inches. However, 40 inches is close, so it should do (if it is at least HD at 720p resolution, but 1080i/p would be better).
